How to clean a coffee grinder
Domestic and commercail coffee grinders differ somewhat in the configuration of the grinding components. A domestic grinder will generally have a burr set where as a commercial grinder may have grinding wheels or discs. The idea behind cleaning your grinder is to prolong its usable life and to make efficient use of your equipment. A grinder will collect a build up of stale coffee grinds and coffee oils.
Before you attempt to clean your grinder, disconnect your grinder from the power plug at the wall - it would be a disaster to have an accident. Remove the bean hopper from the main unit and give it a general clean using mild soapy water and a cloth. Remove the burrset or grinding wheel and give it all a good general clean using a stiff brush (a toothbrush is perfect). Be careful not to get the grinding wheel or burrset wet as it may be prone to rusting. Reassemble everything and check its operation.
Its a good idea to replace the burset or grinding wheels every year or so, depending on the use it gets. For heavy duty commercial grinders, your grinding wheels can be resharpened professionally at less cost to replacing them - keep in mind that depending on the turn around time of the resharpening process, you may be without your main grinder.

Whole beans or preground coffee?
Whole coffee beans will retain their peak freshness for longer when compared to ground coffee beans. It is best to have a grinder, and grind your coffee beans on demand if you can. Store your coffee in an airtight container in the dark. Its not recommended to store your coffee in the fridge or freezer - your coffee will be adversely affected by condensation and the mix of flavours from your fridge. Since you are starting with much fresher beans, you will benefit dramatically over supermarket coffee, or worse supermarket ground coffee.
Freshness and use-by dates
Coffee Bean Shop coffee is roasted fresh for you. In contrast, supermarket coffee can be 12 months old before you even buy it, so you're way ahead with Coffee Bean Shop fresh roasted coffee beans already. I suggest beans are at their peak for one month, but I know of people that regularly keep coffee beans for three to six months. Its completely up to your taste.
Coffee Bean Shop coffee is packed in one-way valve, foil lined bags for ultimate freshness.
Roasted Coffee releases CO2 which means that over time the pressure inside the coffee bag increases “blowing the bag up like a balloon”. To solve this situation one way degassing valves were created. The valves are made of PET. These valves let the CO2 escape without allowing air to re-enter the bag, resulting in a fresher bag of coffee. When the pressure reaches 0.1375psi (9.5 millibar) the valve will release the air from bag automatically until the pressure decreases to 0.0375psi(2.6millibar). Degassing valves are a coffee industry standard and are highly recommended. We only provide the best quality valves from Switzerland and Italy.
